Many theologians have recognized that divine holiness stands at the very center of Scripture, yet there remains little agreement on how it should be understood. In his book Markus Holmbom offers an in-depth theological retrieval of Stephen Charnock’s doctrine of divine holiness and argues that holiness is not merely one divine attribute among others, but the key to understanding the unity, beauty, and integrity of all God’s attributes.
Drawing on biblical exegesis, historical theology, and systematic reflection, the study develops Charnock’s insights in dialogue with contemporary discussions of divine simplicity, providence, and the problem of evil. It presents a constructive account of how God’s holiness relates to justice, mercy, wisdom, and love, while also offering a fresh approach to questions concerning God’s relation to evil and suffering. By bringing together Puritan theology and contemporary debates, Holmbom demonstrates the enduring significance of divine holiness for Christian doctrine today.
Markus Holmbom completed his MA in Systematic Theology at Umeå University, Sweden, and holds a PhD in Systematic and Historical Theology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
His research specializes in divine holiness, divine simplicity, providence, and the problem of evil in Reformed theology, particularly in the thought of Stephen Charnock and the Reformed orthodox tradition. He served in pastoral ministry in Sweden for ten years.
