Practices of Screenshotting
Theorizing Movable Images with Stills of Video Games and Google Street View
What happens when movable digital images become still? Easily confused with the digital images they capture, screenshots resemble photography but are far more multifaceted. Kevin Pauliks and Jens Ruchatz explore, identify, and catalogue practices associated with screenshots, focusing on the transformation of movable into still images, from video games and digital panoramas to screenshots. Through a praxiographic analysis of navigating virtual environments, capturing movable images, and presenting still images on social media, they theorize how screenshots document, advertise, and critique video games and digital panoramas. The result is a practice theory of the digital image through digital images.
Kevin Pauliks is a postdoctoral researcher, who worked on the project “Capturing Movable Images. Screenshots as Theorizing Media Practice” within the Priority Programme “The Digital Image” at Philipps-Universität Marburg (2019–2027). He earned his PhD with a dissertation on “Meme Marketing in Social Media” and worked as a research assistant in sociology at Bergische Universität Wuppertal from 2017 to 2019. His research interests include digital media, with a focus on memes, screenshots and video games.
