Maghrebis in French Fiction
Postmigration, Stereotype, and the Politics of Character
For over half a century, French literature and visual culture have incorporated characters from the Maghrebi diaspora. Álvaro Luna-Dubois reveals how fictional narratives portray France’s leading and longest-running diaspora in limited ways that call for critical attention. Drawing on over three hundred works, from Romain Gary and Mehdi Charef to Faïza Guène and Dominique Manotti, the volume assembles a panorama running from the labouring father, the urban boy, the mother and daughter to newer queer characters, detectives, terrorists and politicians. Some sustain inherited stereotypes, others revise them, and others invent moulds of their own. A timely reflection on writing social plurality in the twenty-first century.
