How is heritage produced, authorized, contested, and transformed? Moving beyond the notion of heritage as a stable inheritance from the past, the study approaches it as an open political field in which actors, forms of knowledge, technologies, materialities, and ways of relating to the past intersect. Bringing cosmopolitics into dialogue with genealogy, Dušan Ristić develops a sociological approach to heritage and asks what comes to count as heritage and whose past it embodies. The resulting framework offers new perspectives on how societies negotiate the past in the present, making the study relevant to scholars in the humanities and social sciences, heritage professionals, and readers interested in the politics of the past.

Dušan Ristić, born in 1980, worked as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions postdoc researcher at the Department of Digital Humanities at Universität Graz. He also held an associate professorship in sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. He developed his research profile in the sociology of knowledge as well as Foucauldian and discourse studies and entered the field of heritage studies and digital humanities in the last few years. His research intersects digitalization, cultural heritage and discourse analysis, as well as the innovative ways of using digital methods in sociological and digital humanities research.
