asia issue 02

Featuring 44 pages of previously unpublished work by Mark Steinmetz, alongside contributions from Stephen Shore, Lieko Shiga, and Daniel Shea. asia is an annual photographic publication on Asia, based in Paris. Through the eyes of those who live there and those who pass through, it gathers the region’s intimacy and contradictions. This second issue, out in late October 2026, brings together eight photographers. Mark Steinmetz travels to Hong Kong and Shenzhen in 2017, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 2018. Industrial southern China meets rural Central Asia. Stephen Shore spent three days in Abu Dhabi in 2009, a city built in forty years and not yet finished. Sandals left at the edge of a prayer mat, a leather sofa abandoned at the curb, an office chair and a stool outside a shuttered shop. Hardly a person in sight, only a presence that has just withdrawn. Adam Rouhana, a Palestinian American photographer, has been making portraits in Palestine with an 8×10 view camera since 2025. The people he photographs look back and smile, while the war goes on around them. Life is still being lived there. Lieko Shiga, who lived through the Great East Japan Earthquake and continues to work in Miyagi, contributes work that extends toward her solo exhibition NANUMOKANUMO, Anything and Everything, opening on 31 October at Aomori Museum of Art. Fifteen years on, the earthquake is not over. Daniel Shea, who published Distribution with MACK in 2025, photographs buildings, construction, and trees at every scale. Chris Rhodes moves through Japan in two seasons, finding the unfamiliar inside the everyday. Guanyu Xu turns the homes of immigrants into installations of their belongings and archival images, then photographs them. In a Taipei dormitory in winter 2025, John Yuyi watches a shadow swell on the wall under the light of an iPhone. A bubble tea left unfinished becomes a small ghost story.
