This memoir tells a story of disaster relief through the personal lens of a clinical psychologist by blending the experience of frontline urgency with insights into the human mind and behavior. It follows the author’s transformation from a civilian Ukrainian-American psychologist into an unexpected rescue coordinator during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. From the comfort of her home, Alla becomes a lifeline for families fleeing the front lines by coordinating evacuations and working alongside grassroots networks at a time when international systems stall. This book is a study of trauma and a testament to human resilience which raises urgent questions: How do ordinary people become rescuers? What sustains trust in a crisis? How can collaboration reimagine humanitarian response in the 21st century?
Dr. Alla Prokhovnik-Raphique is a clinical psychologist who runs her private practice “Nurturing Roots Psychology” in New York City.
