With his latest personal work, 'Adolescence', creative polymath Malick Bodian once again delivers a photographic meditation on time through the lens of coming of age—that vital period, both fleeting and universal, marking the transition from childhood to adulthood.
These compelling images invite reflection on whether today's youth remain more closely connected to their Senegalese ancestors or to their contemporaries around the world as they exchange the cherished rituals of childhood for the growing immediacy of the digital age. These questions are deftly explored throughout 'Adolescence'.
Rich with color and exacting in detail, these photographs pulse across the African continent, from Rwanda and Kenya to The Gambia and the artist’s native Senegal. Here, seemingly quotidian textures—the upholstered florals of a living room sofa or a yellow dress reserved for a special occasion—are rendered with a delicate, painterly sensibility. Each photograph serves as a potential proxy for the artist while simultaneously allowing its subject to emerge as the protagonist. The result is a body of work that is exceptionally original, profoundly moving, and unmistakably Bodian's.
