Rare Bacon is a collection of personal essays that explore a seemingly disparate range of subjects— family, mental health, class, Canadian-ness—with each topic overlapping and tangling in on itself. Madu masterfully offers acute observations and insight into the personal, political, and social aspects of his hometown of Prince George, B.C.
Stuck and unfulfilled in a retail job, Madu uses each superbly crafted essay to dissect his personal experience and to explore each facet of his community as an armchair psychologist, sociologist, archeologist, and observer of the human condition. This collection offers a microcosm of that which existed all around his environment,, and explores how identity, place, and associative connections can be complicated and often chaotic.
Justin Madu is a writer and educator living currently in the interior of British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern British Columbia and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. He has lived in BC his whole life, primarily growing up in Prince George, nicknamed "BC's Northern Capital," which has come to define much of his nonfiction work.
