Nursi wrote this volume around 1918 when he was a member of the Higher Council of Islam (Darü'I-Hikmet) following his return to Istanbul from captivity in Siberia as the horror of the first great war of the twentieth century was looming across vast lands. The book is a product of an ambitious man who occupied himself with the salvation of humanity both from the hot wars in this world and from the chastisement in the hereafter.
Bediüzzaman Said Nursi was a 20th-century Turkish scholar of Islam and philosophy who advocated compatibility of Islamic thought with modernity. He was the author of the Risale-i Nur, a 5,000-page modern commentary on the Qur'an.
