High-school teacher Farzin Rouhani steps out of his house on the last day of spring of 1981.Walking under Tehran's sizzling midday sun, his stroll towards his lover's apart-ment is interrupted. His timing could not have been worse, for an unau-thorised opposition rally is in full swing which in turn provokes the retribu-tion of the government. Farzin is caught in the middle of the chains and clubs. His hopes for seeing his friend quickly evapo-rate. That is not all. He is mistaken as an organiser of the march and arrested. The arresting officer begins interrogating him in jail -- a process that spans the entire summer. His mission is to discover why Farzin despite a gov-ernment ban was where he was and what his role was at the rally. Farzin cannot reveal the truth because the penalty for being gay in the Islamic republic is death.
Massud Alemi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1959, and immigrated to the United States for higher education in 1977. The Islamic revolution of 1979 made an impact on him, as on many others. He studied history and researched the roots of the upheaval in the country of his birth, and within him the seed to write grew. Alemi worked as a cook, waiter, cab-driver, courier, graphic designer, and computer network engineer to make ends meet. Meanwhile he graduated from George Mason University in Virginia, and continued to write in both English and Persian. His writings have appeared in various in-print and on-line publications.
