Sakralraum im säkularen Kontext
Studien zu hybrider Raumnutzung ausgehend vom Leipziger Paulinum
The Paulinum—Aula and St. Pauli University Church in Leipzig—opened in 2017 as a hybrid space. It serves simultaneously as the university’s ceremonial hall, university church, a venue for exhibitions of traditional church furnishings organized by the Custody, and a concert hall for the university’s music program; it was specifically planned and designed for these diverse uses and spatial interpretations. What insights can be gained from its use to date regarding the search for sacred spaces in the interplay between the church and other spheres of society? The contributions in this book offer an initial assessment of synergies and areas of tension, mutual harmonies and interconnections in the space’s use; they shed light on the Paulinum as a site of cultural memory and as a potential city church; they look back at historical hybridity in the space; and they open up comparative perspectives on religious spaces at universities, church reconstruction projects in eastern Germany, museums in churches, university churches in other locations, and the spatial divisions being introduced into church interiors. Overall, this volume thus contributes to the exploration of the potential for the transformation of sacred spaces through cooperation between religious and secular actors.
