The liturgical hymns collected in it celebrate saints—such as biblical figures, martyrs, monks, and bishops—as well as events in church history, such as significant synods and the consecration of churches. The Difnar is published here in its entirety for the first time and translated into German. The edition is based on the oldest known Bohairic Difnar manuscript (14th century) from the Monastery of St. Anthony on the Red Sea and, for the lost volumes covering the months of Hatur and Kiyahk, on a faithful 18th-century copy currently housed in the Coptic Museum in Cairo. The edition and translation are accompanied by notes on textual corruption and corrections, as well as additional commentary. Differences between the Coptic and Arabic versions of the *Difnar* are highlighted, and the biblical quotations incorporated into the hymns are identified. Prof. Dr. Stephen Emmel (University of Münster) has contributed, among other things, studies on the history of research on the Difnar and on the structure of the work and its hymns. Numerous color photographs, indexes of Greek loanwords and proper names, an alphabetical list of the saints venerated in the Difnar, and descriptions of the most important Difnar manuscripts round out the publication.
