Cranbrook, British Columbia, is your quintessential Rocky Mountain town, but in The Secret History of My Hometown, it is anything but typical. A young lovesick Ernest Hemingway hunts for missing elephants; Leon Trotsky decides that Cranbrook, not Mexico City, is the perfect place to hide away; and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a Chinese family’s grocery store’s survival rests in the hands of the legendary Monkey King.

Andrew Boden provides an array of original voices that add humour and personality to this imagined history, resulting in a collection of stories that demonstrate the powerfully deep and often unremembered history of smalltown life.

Andrew Boden is the author of When We Were Ashes, a finalist for the Amazon Canada First Novel Award. His fiction and non-fiction have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, including the Journey Prize anthology, Prairie Fire, The New Quarterly, Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine, and Descant. Boden is also the co-editor of Hidden Lives: Coming Out on Mental Illness, a ground-breaking anthology of evocative personal essays. Originally from Cranbrook, BC, Boden now lives in Burnaby, in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The Secret History of My Hometown is his first short story collection.
